What is ISO 14001:2015?
ISO 14001:2015 Certification can provide assurance to company management and em-ployees as well as external stakeholders that the environmental impact is being meas-ured and improved. ISO 14001 Certification is permitted only where an organisation can demonstrate successfully that they can accurately ascertain and document the impacts their operations have upon the environment and that their efforts to improve upon those impacts are ongoing.
UKAS accredited ISO 14001 certification helps introduce a continual improvement ap-proach to an Environmental Management System (EMS). You will assess the best and worst impacts that your business has on the environment to then prioritise change and improvement to reduce the environmental impact of your business.
Growing awareness of global warming and increasing concern for the environment spurred the ISO into updating the standard in 2015, underlining the need for businesses and others to deal more energetically with improvements in areas such as waste man-agement, distribution costs and the reduction in consumption of materials and energy.

Establishing your environmental credentials
Your clients will increasingly expect your Company to have an EMS in place that is ex-ternally audited and certified, to guarantee its credibility. UKAS accredited ISO 14001 cer-tification will enable you to demonstrate to those associated with your business that you are doing your best for the planet and to ensure you, the supplier, are taking your respon-sibilities of the future of our planet, for our children and grandchildren, seriously.
The financial rewards to your organisation of an effective EMS usually means that your system will pay for itself in the first few years with future savings on energy and waste management being added to ongoing profit.
The ISO 14001 certification process
The ISO 14001 certification process involves two audits/assessments.
The first is a desktop review, sometimes referred to as a stage 1 audit and it assesses your current processes to identify any areas that need improving.
The second stage is an evidence-based audit, sometimes referred to as a stage 2. This determines if those areas have been improved and whether your EMS meets the stand-ards of ISO 14001.
How long does the ISO 14001 Certification last
The ISO 14001 certification is valid for 3 years subject to an annual surveillance audit.
Auditing and certification at your convenience
Some businesses are put off seeking ISO 14001 certification because they think it will disrupt their business.
The pandemic has served to fast-track the move to a blended approach to auditing and certification, with much of the process now being completed remotely, minimizing the need for always requiring site visits and associated disruption.
