What is ISO 9001:2015?
How does a business effectively demonstrate its commitment to quality management systems ?
ISO 9001 Certification is awarded to companies that have established an internal Quality Management System which ensures their customers receive products or services that are fit for purpose, meet and hopefully exceed their expectations.
ISO 9001 is often seen as the bedrock upon which all the other ISO standards are built as it originates from the need for consistency of quality in products and services.
Prior to the development of ISO 9001 Certification manufacturers and suppliers believed that responsibility for ensuring quality was with the customer and not themselves. Eventually in the decades following World War II manufacturers came to recognise that the onus for quality assurance should ultimately fall on their shoulders, although it took a quarter of a century after the end of the war for a national standard to be established.
The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) eventually gave the world the tools it needed and fortuitously opened new doors to clients and suppliers alike giving them a level playing field on which to operate on sharing the same ethos of quality and reliability.
The benefits of Quality Management Principles
UKAS Accredited ISO 9001 Certification is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement.
Using ISO 9001:2015 helps ensure that customers achieve consistent, good quality products and services, which in turn brings many business benefits.
Remember: Successful businesses prefer to deal with other successful businesses!
Furthermore your clients increasingly insist upon higher degrees of excellence, guaranteed consistency and assured delivery.
A Certified ISO 9001 system assures you and your clients of this and ultimately removes the need for your customers to audit you themselves!
ISO 9001 certification will give a significant boost to your company’s profile and competitiveness and inevitably be a major contributor to your company’s growth and profitability.
The ISO brand can also open up overseas markets with British companies exporting manufactured goods and services abroad more easily because of the global recognition and respect the ISO 9001 system demands.
The ISO 9001 certification process
The ISO 9001 certification process involves two audits/assessments.
The first is a desktop review, sometimes referred to as a stage 1 audit and it assesses your current processes to identify any areas that need improving.
The second stage is an evidence-based audit, sometimes referred to as a stage 2. This determines if those areas have been improved and whether your QMS meets the standards of ISO 9001.
How long does the ISO 9001 Certification last
The ISO 9001 certification is valid for 3 years subject to an annual surveillance audit.
Auditing and certification at your convenience
Some businesses are put off seeking ISO 9001 certification because they think it will disrupt their business.
The pandemic has served to fast-track the move to a blended approach to auditing and certification, with much of the process now being completed remotely, minimizing the need for always requiring site visits and associated disruption.
